Preparing Your Home for Fall

Preparing Your Home for FallIt's that time of year when things start to slow down and the weather begins to cool. As we head dive into fall and stroll merrily into winter it is important to take the time to prepare your home for the dipping temperatures. If you are a do-it-yourselfer you should be able to knock out many projects on your own, but you may need to head on down to the equipment rental store to get the tools to ensure the job is done right. In either case, here's a few tips to start the home winterization process.

HVAC Maintenance

Be sure to test your HVAC system to ensure that it will be providing unobstructed, clean and importantly, warm, air when needed. This is the perfect time of year to replace your furnace's filter.

Clean Gutters

Fall is a great time to make sure that your gutters are not clogged. A chance of rain, followed by freezing temperatures, could leave standing water in your gutters, adding stress and weight to the system. Standing water also provides a breeding ground for insects, which could pose a health risk to you and your family.

Care for Outdoor Faucets

Any outdoor faucets need to be properly insulated. Remove and drain any attached hoses, and store them as you wish. Use foam insulators to cover the faucets to help protect them from the freezing temperatures. If water inside the faucets freezes, it could lead to burst pipes and other plumbing problems.

Inspect Roof

Take a good look at your roof. If you notice cracked, missing or otherwise damaged or missing shingles or tiles, you'll need to replace them yourself, or call in a pro if it is out of your wheelhouse. A rental equipment company will have the tools you need to get the job done, should you choose to do it yourself.

Clean Chimneys & Wood Stoves

Is your home equipped with wood burning fireplaces or stoves? Be sure to clean the chimneys of ash and check the flue to ensure a tight seal when closed.
